South Africa - History - British Rule !

Not everyone was happy to fall under British rule and many white South Africans known as Boers chose to leave the areas ruled by Britain and live independently further to the north of the British Cape strongholds. The discovery of diamonds and gold in the late 19th century encouraged the British further north, resisted by the fiercely independent Boers. After initial successes the Boers were eventually defeated in 1902 after some savage fighting and even more savage tactics employed by the British, particularly upon the civilian Boer population, including the use of concentration camps. The peace treaty that followed included one notable fact: no votes for blacks other than those in the strong British heartlands around the cape.
